In this paper, we will describe the meaning of “Byzantine” faults, present two very different solutions to the problem—Prime and the Bitcoin blockchain—and explore their comparative strengths and weaknesses.

Toward Open Source Intrusion Tolerant SCADA

SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems are in charge of much of the world’s critical infrastructure. They have traditionally existed on private networks and, thus, security has often been an afterthought in their designs. Exploits against these systems have the potential to cause large scale disasters, particularly as they begin to move to the open Internet.
